Description
A roubust perennial herb with thick, long roots, 1-15m tall and grows on
rocky lands roots are stout and the stem is hollow. Lower leaves are 20-50cm
in diameter, orbicular and are broadly ovate. Flowers are small and dark
purple in color. Fruits are purple and angled.
Chemical Constituents
Chrysophanic acid, emodin, starch, rhein, anthraquinone derivatives,
essential oil, calcium oxalate and a resinous substance have been obtained
from the roots. Leaves contain oxalic acid.
Cosmetic Uses
Rhubarb Root has a purgative action for use in the treatment of
constipation, but also has an astringent effect following this. It therefore
has a truly cleansing action upon the gut, removing debris and then
astringing with antiseptic properties as well. Note: Rhubarb Root may color
the urine yellow or red. Capturing the highlighting power of the revered
Rhubarb plant and enhancing it with citrus extracts (lemon, grapefruit and
pineapple) proves to lighten, brighten and just plain put a shine, with the
help of sun and heating time, in all shades of blonde and brunette crowns.
Rhubarb is a fair source of potassium, is low in sodium and has minor
amounts of vitamins; however, the stalks of rhubarb contain high amounts of
Vitamin C, dietary fiber and calcium. The root is used to lighten the hair.
It gives a
honey grey colour.
Medicinal Uses
Rhizomes/ roots are purgative, astringent, tonic, stomachic and aperient.
The petioles are pickled. Powered roots are used for cleaning teeth and are
sprinkled over ulcers from quick healing. In action, it is aperient,
astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, purgative, stomachic and
tonic. It is of special use for infants stomach problems. The roots is used
along with
madder and potash for dyeing fabrics. Red-leaf stalks are eaten either raw of boiled, sprinkled with salt and pepper. Root is regarded as a pancea in local home remedies and is used in stomach problems cuts, wound and muscular swellings, tonisillitis and mumps. It has been found as a potent anti-inflammatory drug.
